Webpage Redesign Project

About

Why redesign the library website?

Here are a few reasons:

  • to be more user centered
  • to create an intuitive web space which is interactive and dynamic
  • to implement a content management system
  • to ensure pages are accessible to users using screen readers
  • to maintain strong navigation throughout the site

Features of the proposed site:

  • compatible with 1024 x 768 screen resolution
  • content management used to manage our web content
  • incorporate Web 2.0 features (RSS feeds,  comments, notification of updates via email)
  • enhanced navigation
  • multiple events calendars for each library
  • printable posts
  • content editors can post to shared Flickr photo gallery
  • ability to forward posts to friends

Why use WordPress?

  • multiple users allowed to create content
  • content editors will not have to learn HTML code to write their pages
  • site easier to maintain
  • content can be created once and reused or duplicated across the site
  • links can be chceked and verified more easily
  • easier to make global updates to content & links

When do you expect to go live?

Phase I is having the Tech Team test out blog posting and work through any unforeseen problems.  Phase II is getting this information out to staff about the redesign project and soliciting fedeback.  I would also like to have some staff help assist me in beta testing.  Volunteers?  Can I bribe you with pizza?

After digesting the feedback we get, we proceed to Phase III, hoepfully at the beginning of December.  Phase III is to let the public preview the new site and get some feedback from our patrons.  When we go live depends a lot on the feedback received.  I would like to go live on December 15, 2008.   But, we’ll have to see how this process plays out.

Can I offer my two-cents?

Yes!  We welcome comments from all library staff, and the public.  You can help in several ways.  Email your opinions to the Tech Team, add your comment below and/or fill out a short online survey which will help us implement some of the features you’d like to see in the library web site.
